Radical Cystectomy, Bladder Cancer and Partial Cystectomy

Radical Cystectomy may be indicated for recurring bladder tumors. Bladder surgery for an early stage bladder tumor will be a transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT). This surgery simply removes the bladder tumor which will then be analyzed. Some follow up bladder cancer treatments may include intravesical therapy where medication is put into the bladder to help insure that the bladder cancer will not come back. Follow up visits will see if your bladder tumor has continued to grow or even spread into other parts of the bladder. If your tumors become recurring then a partial cystectomy or even a radical cystectomy may be the solution to stop the cancer especially from spreading to other parts of your body.
Radical Cystectomy while a seemingly major surgery has been the operation that has saved many lives. Estimates of bladder cancer for 2009 are a little over 70 thousand in the US according to the American Cancer Society (ACS).
The great majority (90%) of people that get bladder cancer are over 55 years old. Men have three times the occurrence of bladder cancer then women. Three quarters of the people that are diagnosed with bladder cancer have it only in their bladder. Fewer than 20% of the people diagnosed with bladder cancer have it also in the tissues in the area of the bladder. Fortunately only 3% of patients diagnosed with bladder cancer have cancer in other parts of the body.
Radical Cystectomy, Partial Cystectomy, and the simpler bladder surgery, transurethral resection of bladder tumor in most cases will either include intravesical therapy, radiation therapy or chemotherapy to help reduce or remove the cancer. The combination of surgery and therapies is determined on the type of cancer, how much cancer, and where the cancer is located in your bladder.
